A little context

What is space weather?

Activity from the Sun can disturb Earth’s magnetic environment. NOAA describes geomagnetic storms on a scale from G1 (Minor) to G5 (Extreme). These are environmental conditions, not a scale of how a person should feel. See NOAA’s space-weather scales.

What does Kp mean?

The planetary K index, or Kp, describes geomagnetic activity. A Kp of 5 reaches NOAA’s G1 storm threshold. Current estimates and completed observations can differ, so the time and source matter.
