The sleep & wellbeing guide

Sleep, mood
& the world outside.

What helps insomnia? Does the Moon affect sleep or mood? Can magnetic storms explain how you feel? Find a clear starting point, with practical guidance and a careful look at the research.

Different questions. Different evidence.

A treatment guideline is not
a correlation study.

Before applying a finding to your own night, ask what was tested, in whom, and whether other studies found the same thing.

Clinical guideline · adults

What helps chronic insomnia?

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends multicomponent CBT-I [1] for adults with chronic insomnia. Sleep hygiene alone is not recommended as the sole treatment.

This is guidance about treatment. It does not mean a diary or an app provides CBT-I.

Observational research · limited

What about magnetic activity?

In a 2020 study of heart-rate variability [4], most relationships disappeared after accounting for dependence between measurements over time. The remaining effects were very small.

Heart-rate variability is not the same as insomnia or mood. This study cannot diagnose “storm sensitivity”.

01 / Start with sleep

A difficult night.
A useful next step.

Start with everyday sleep questions and when to seek help. Then explore the treatment recommended for chronic insomnia and a simple way to describe your nights.

02 / Notice your experience

Your feelings deserve
their own record.

Begin with what you noticed, before looking for an explanation. Explore the mood research and keep room for sleep, stress and ordinary days in your journal.

03 / Look at the evidence

What do the
studies actually show?

Choose the question you came with. Each article separates the observation, the study design and what the result cannot tell you about one person.

One small practice

Record first.
Look for context later.

A useful journal leaves room for an ordinary night, an unexpected feeling and an uncertain answer. Start with your experience before checking the environmental charts.

How to keep a sleep diary
  1. Your night

Approximate sleep and wake times, awakenings, and how rested you feel. An estimate is useful; a missing answer is not zero.

  2. Your everyday context

Note mood, stress, caffeine, illness or a changed routine. Keep these observations separate from a proposed cause.

  3. The wider picture

If you add Moon or storm observations, keep the date, time zone and source. Include ordinary days, too. One coincidence does not establish a pattern or its cause.

An editorial recording method, not a validated diagnostic tool. The diary guide includes a blank download you can keep privately; this page collects no entries.

Schumann Pulse for iPhone

Keep your own experience
in the picture.

Record your sleep quality, feelings, energy, mood and focus. Keep everyday tags and notes, revisit your journal and follow Moon phases and environmental observations in Pulse. Personal comparisons need enough suitable records and may show no clear difference.

iPhone app coming soon · history and personal comparisons live in the app. Schumann Pulse is not CBT-I or medical care.
